Aristeides of Miletus
Aristeides of Miletus was a Greek writer of the late Hellenism (around 100 BC).
He wrote erotic stories with a very lascivious content, titled Milet Μιλησιακά ( Milesiaca , "Milesian stories") after their location , which are to be regarded as the first beginnings of the Greek prose novel . They were very popular in ancient times, especially among the Romans, by whom the historian Lucius Cornelius Sisenna translated them into Latin. Milesia historia became a generic term for erotic novels. The corresponding entries in the later novels of Petronius and Apuleius could go back to Aristeides. Only a few fragments of the work of Aristezides and the translation have survived.
Historical works, especially Sikelika , are also attributed to Aristeides ( FGrH 286), but the author could also be another Aristeides.
