Transcoder and Rate Adaptation Unit

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The transcoder and rate adaptation unit ( TRAU ; German: transcoding unit ) is part of the infrastructure of a GSM - the mobile radio network , and has the task with a low data transmission rate to convert working traffic channels of the radio interface into 64 kbit / s channels of the fixed network infrastructure and vice versa . It is controlled by the mobile radio transmitter ( BTS ) to which it is logically assigned.

The transcoding units are physically located in the GSM network in the Base Station Controller (BSC) and in the UMTS network in the mobile services switching center ( MSC ) and can use the 64 kbit / s channels in the sub multiplex , for example with four full-rate voice channels each a 64 kbit / s channel.
