Arkesilaos (Satrap)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Arkesilaos († probably after 320 BC) was a governor of Alexander the great .

Arkesilaos was Macedonian and probably took part in Alexander's campaign in Asia. In the traditions it is only mentioned once, after Alexander's death in 323 BC. Chr., Called. In the imperial order of Babylon he was appointed satrap of the province of Mesopotamia .

The province of Mesopotamia is mentioned for the first time, which suggests that it did not exist under the rule of the Achaemenids . It is possible, however, that after the capture of Mesopotamia as a result of the battle of Gaugamela in 331 BC , Alexander died . BC this province, which controlled the routes between the Middle East and Central Asia, had set up and left it to a trusted follower, perhaps Arkesilaos, to administer it. Because in Babylon itself the Persian Mazaios was left in office, although he had still fought against Alexander at Gaugamela.

After the first diadoch war , the victors at the conference of Triparadeisos in 320 BC appointed The Macedonians Amphimachus as the new satrap of Mesopotamia. It is possible that Arkesilaos was a supporter of the defeated imperial regent Perdiccas and therefore had to vacate his post.
