Armagetron is a computer game , the gameplay of which can be seen in the film Tron and was published as open source under GPL version 2. The game, which requires extremely little storage space and is shown in three dimensions , requires a lot of skill and good reflexes from the player.

The development of the original Armagetron has now been stopped and replaced by armagetronad (Armagetron Advanced). The main difference is the display of a heads-up display , which shows speed, opponents and other live displays about the game. armagetronad runs on Linux , macOS and Windows .

The name of the game is derived from the words Armageddon and Tron .

Original gameplay

Scene from "Armagetron"

In Armagetron, the player controls a virtual motorcycle ( light cycle ) on a grid-shaped playing field. The size of the field is adjustable, in the current version of Armagetronad more than 30 players can play simultaneously in the network ( LAN or Internet ). The light cycles pull walls ( trails ) behind them during the course of the game , which are impenetrable for the vehicles and in the event of a collision lead to the player being eliminated.

In the default setting of the game, the light cycles can only turn at right angles. The speed depends on the distance to other or your own walls: the closer you are to a trail in parallel, the greater the acceleration. Depending on the server settings, the light cycles can also be slowed down, but not stopped. The goal now is to block the path of the opponents in such a way that they cannot find a way out and, in the absence of the possibility of stopping, must drive against the boundary of the playing field or an energy wall and be destroyed as a result. The player wins when all opponents are destroyed.

Newer game modes

Version 0.2.8.0 made it possible to turn at any angle and play in other types of arenas (no longer necessarily a square playing surface). New varieties such as “Fortress” and “Race” offer additional variety; In “races”, for example, the players try to drive through a labyrinth-like structure ( maze ) as quickly as possible. In "Fortress" up to four teams play against each other; The task is to defend or penetrate into "zones" marked by circles. Other game modes are called "Sumo", "High Rubber", " Capture the Flag " (combined with " Prison Break ") and "Hold the flag" ("Catch"). Some well-known map types are called "Chico", "Nano" and "Octagon".

Armacycles Advanced

Armagetron version 0.2.8.2

Armacycles Advanced is the name for Armagetron Advanced in the Linux distribution Fedora . This name exists because Red Hat wanted to prevent possible trademark infringement through the use of the name Tron .

Multiplayer mode

Armagetron is network-compatible and has a constantly growing online community. Due to the growing popularity of Fortress and the various options for configuring servers, regular tournaments have emerged, for example the so-called Ladle and the Team Sumo Tournament . Furthermore, the Fortress mode has its own league, the Fortress Premier League . The teams are for the most part provided by clans, although there are also open teams whose players are not members of a clan .
