Crossbow (heraldry)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The crossbow is a common figure in heraldry and is represented in a highly stylized way. As a weapon used very early and highly developed in the Middle Ages , it is not a common coat of arms . Two forms of representation can be found in coats of arms : once the complete crossbow and a little more sparsely only the crossbow yoke . All heraldic colors are possible. The cocked weapon must be reported . The crossbow is occasionally held by a heraldic figure such as humans or animals . The yoke, the bracket, has been referred to by heraldists as the ox yoke since around the 18th century . This herald image is often arranged in number three on top of each other in the coat of arms. The Swiss, but also the South German heraldry gladly took the weapon.
