Armor Piercing Infantry Light Arm System
Apilas ( A rmour P iercing I nfantry L ight A rm S ystem ) is a modern, French recoilless anti-tank hand weapon that the defense contractor Nexter has been developed and is used by many armed forces worldwide.
technology
The APILAS anti-tank system was introduced in the 1980s in order to be able to successfully combat the composite armor of the heavy Soviet T-72 battle tanks from the front. It has become an expensive weapon over the course of its development. The tube is made of glass fiber reinforced plastic and is thrown away after use. In order to shield the shooter from the strong propellant charge, the weapon has a face shield on the barrel. An optical sight (3x magnification) with angle correction is used for targeted purposes. This is removed after the weapon has been fired and attached to a new barrel. A night visor can also be used. The weapon is triggered electrically. The missile is only unlocked from 25 m. The shaped charge warhead ignites reliably at angles of incidence of up to 80 °. By 2006 over 120,000 APILAS had been produced. The anti-tank system is used by Belgium , Chile , Finland , France, Italy , Jordan , South Korea , Saudi Arabia and Taiwan . In Finland the system is called 112 RSKES APILAS . France has been using the anti-tank weapon since 1985.
