Arne Larsen Økland (born May 31, 1954 in Bømlo ) is a former Norwegian football player.

Arne Larsen Økland grew up in the village of Økland and joined a local football club there. From Vard Haugesund he moved to Bryne IL in the first Norwegian league in 1976 at the age of 23 . He worked full-time as a tax auditor, as his monthly salary was only around 1500 euros.

He became famous in Germany when he played for Bayer 04 Leverkusen from 1980 to 1983 . There he scored 43 goals in 101 games. He attracted particular attention in 1981 when Leverkusen played against FC Bayern Munich . After Økland had already scored a hat trick for Leverkusen in the game, he was awarded a fourth goal. However, the ball hit the net bar behind the goal. Økland informed the referee of the game, Udo Horeis , when he had already placed the ball at the center line to kick off. Horeis then revised the goal decision, thanked Økland with a handshake and allowed the game to continue with a goal kick for Bayern. Økland received the fair play plaque from the world association Fifa for this campaign. When asked whether he would have been so honest when the score was 0-0, Økland replied: "I don't know, but I hope so."

When he left Bayer 04 Leverkusen in 1983 , he initially moved to RC Paris until 1985 . Økland ended his career with Bryne IL in 1987.

He played 54 times in the Norwegian national team and scored 13 goals.

After the career

From 1989 to 1994 Økland was assistant coach of the Norwegian national team. He has owned a large pizzeria chain since 1992. 1997 Økland acquired the island Hillesøy , where he now lives, for the equivalent of 125,000 German marks . In 2001 he became European champion in deep sea fishing . Økland was also on the board of the Norwegian football club Viking Stavanger . Since summer 2012 he has been the club's sports director and managing director .
