Arpine Aschoti Howhannisjan ( Armenian Արփինե Աշոտի Հովհաննիսյան ; born December 4, 1983 in Yerevan , Armenian SSR , Soviet Union ) is an Armenian politician and lawyer. She is the former Minister of Justice of the Republic of Armenia and Vice-President of the National Assembly of Armenia . Howhannisjan was Armenia's first female Justice Minister.

childhood and education

Arpine Howhannisjan, born in Yerevan, attended the law faculty of the Yerevan State University from 2000 to 2004 . In 2006 she obtained her Masters there. It was there that she obtained the academic degree of candidate of science in 2009 .

Working life

In addition to her studies, from 2003 to 2006 she was a first-degree specialist in the reform department of the criminal executive service of the judicial reform department of the staff of the Armenian Ministry of Justice. From 2006 to 2007 she was a senior specialist there. In 2007 she was a lecturer at the Faculty of Civil Law at Yerevan State University. From 2007 to 2008 she was the deputy head of the legal acts examination department of the staff of the Armenian Ministry of Justice. From May 19, 2008 to September 30, 2008 Howhannisjan was Assistant to the Chief of Staff of the Armenian President . From 2008 to 2011 she worked as an adviser to the President of the Armenian National Assembly. On May 6, 2012, Howhannisjan was elected member of the National Assembly through the proportional electoral system of the Republican Party of Armenia . On September 4, 2015, President Serzh Sargsan appointed her Minister of Justice by decree. On April 2, 2017, Howhannisjan was elected Member of the National Assembly for the Republican Party in the national elections. On May 19, 2017, she was elected Vice President of the Armenian National Assembly. 73 MPs voted for her, 22 against her, and 5 votes were declared invalid.

Private life

Arpine Howhannisjan is unmarried. She advocates more women in Armenian politics. She is of the opinion that the relatively small number of female MPs is not due to legal discrimination, but to female psychology.

criticism

Howhannisjan was criticized for the death of Artur Sargsyan, who died in custody after a hunger strike . On March 17, 2017, protesters in Yerevan called for a judicial investigation for Justice Minister Howhannisjan and for everyone involved in the conviction of Artur Sargsyan, which indirectly led to his death.
