Arrivage (wine)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The arrivage (from French arrivage = arrival, delivery) is a term from the wine trade and describes the arrival of the youngest, currently available wine, mostly of a vintage and a preferred growing region. Arrivage is a popular term, especially among Bordeaux wines.

preparation

To some extent, wine dealers secure contingents for the wine before the upcoming harvest: This is done as part of the so-called subscription . At this point in time, usually six months after the harvest of a vintage, the wine to be delivered is offered by way of a commodity future. After the young wine has matured in barrels on the wineries, it is usually bottled after about 18 to 24 months, packed in boxes and sent to the buyers.

Events

Strictly speaking, the term "arrivage" initially only refers to the delivery of the wine to the end customer. In a broader sense, the word describes the period within which wineries and trading houses make the deliveries. After the wine customers have received their deliveries, there is often interest in the tasting to check the quality of the young wine. For this purpose, the "Arrivage tastings" are invited to check the quality of the wine and to assess how these wines are likely to develop over the years of storage. These rounds are also used to compare the young wines with older wines from the same wineries, i.e. to determine whether they developed as predicted when they arrived.
