Arsames (son of Artaxerxes II.)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Arsames ( old Persian Aršama ; † 358 BC ) was a member of the Persian Achaemenid dynasty in the 4th century BC. He was a son of the Great King Artaxerxes II and a concubine. He is not to be confused with his cousin Arsames, son of Ostanes .

Although he was not an equal prince, Arsames was perceived by his half-brother Ochos (later Artaxerxes III ) as a potential competitor for the succession to the throne. Because he was particularly popular with his father. Ochos therefore instigated Arpates, son of Tiribazos , to murder Arsames, whereupon the old Artaxerxes II soon died out of grief over this act.
