Arshak Makichyan

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Arshak Makichyan is a Russian climate activist originally from Armenia. Since December 2019, he has been going on a school strike alone every Friday for the climate on Pushkin Square in Moscow , for over 40 weeks. In Russia, individual protests are legal, while larger protests require police approval. Makichyan has applied for permission for larger protests over 10 times, so far without success.

He has inspired others across Russia to take part in the School Strike for the Climate, including other individuals picketed in Moscow. In December 2019, he was detained for six days, hours after he returned from Madrid, Spain, where he was speaking at the 2019 UN Climate Change Conference (COP 25).

Makichyan is a violinist.
