Arsites (Achaemenid)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Arsites ( Babylonian: Ar-ri-šit-tu; † 423 BC ) was a prince of the Persian ruling dynasty of the Achaemenids in the 5th century BC. He was a son of the Great King Artaxerxes I and his Babylonian concubine Kosmartidene, making him a full brother of the Great King Darius II .

Shortly after his brother came to power in 423 BC. BC Arsites revolted against him together with the nobleman Artyphios , son of Megabyzos . They triumphed twice over the royal general Artasyras , who was then able to bribe their Greek mercenaries to change sides and thus ended the rebellion. Artyphios and Arsites were sentenced to death, but Great King Dareios II wanted to spare his brother's life. Then his wife Parysatis , who was also the half-sister of the brothers, asserted her influence on the king and thus obtained the execution of Arsites. He and Artyphios were executed by " throwing into the ashes ".
