Anterior intercostal artery

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The arteriae intercostales anteriores (singular arteria intercostalis anterior , "anterior intercostal artery ") are segmental arteries of the chest wall on both sides . In animal anatomy, they are referred to as the ventral intercostal arteries . The intercostal arteries of the upper six intercostal spaces arise in humans from the internal thoracic artery , the rest from the musculophrenic artery .

In humans there are usually two anterior intercostal arteries per intercostal space. One, together with the vein and nerve of the same name, runs along the lower edge of the respective rib, the second along the upper edge of the subsequent rib. They supply the muscles and the skin of the corresponding intercostal space. Towards the back, they anastomose with the posterior intercostal arteries .
