Arthur Zimmermann (* 1948 ) is a Swiss social and cultural scientist, author and consultant.

Life

Zimmermann studied history, literature and social sciences at the University of Zurich and the Free University of Berlin from 1969 to 1974 . After completing his master's degree and diploma for higher education, he worked as a research assistant and lecturer at the University of Zurich until 1981. In addition, he taught at various Swiss grammar schools. In 1976 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on the work of Hans Magnus Enzensberger . From 1981 to 1984 he was department head of the Swiss cultural foundation Pro Helvetia and as such was responsible for projects of international cultural exchange and domestic cultural promotion (among other things as initiator of the Kulturmobil project ).

From 1982 to 1984 Zimmermann worked with the support of the Swiss National Science Foundation on a research project on socio-cultural issues of the inter-war period, which involved longer research stays at the Leo Baeck Institute in New York . In 1984 he founded the multidisciplinary consulting company KEK-CDC Consultants AG based in Zurich . The focus of the advice at home and abroad was on strategy and organizational advice, planning and evaluation of development programs. He also worked as an editor for the Swiss broadcaster SRF for the Passage broadcasting vessel. The main topics were Latin America, cultural diversity, institutional development and change in Eastern Europe.

From 1998 Zimmermann took over the management of the German bilateral development programs in Ecuador on behalf of the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ). His main tasks were the formulation of cooperation and sector strategies for sustainable development, especially through the involvement of civil society organizations, and the transparency of public spending. In this context, Zimmermann also worked as a lecturer at Latin American universities (including at the Universidad de las Américas (UDLA) in Ecuador and Chile).

Since 2003 Arthur Zimmermann has been director of the consulting firm odcp consult gmbh, based in Zurich, which deals with international cooperation issues. The consulting focus is on systemic organizational consulting and cooperation management, political economy and development policy, institutional development and conflict transformation.

From 2003 to 2017 Zimmermann also worked as a lecturer at the ETH Zurich with a focus on development policy and institution development, cooperation management and conflict transformation. Since his retirement in September 2017, Zimmermann has been working as a freelance publicist and lives in Colombia and Italy.
