Article 1 - Human Dignity Initiative

Article 1 - Initiative for Human Dignity eV (short: Article 1 or Article One ) is a German association based in Berlin, which advocates the strengthening of democracy and the protection of fundamental values ​​and freedoms in Germany.

The association encourages and supports people to stand up against attacks on democratic coexistence and organizes campaigns and events to promote awareness of the importance of democracy. Article 1 and participants in competitions announced by Article 1 in 2017 and 2019 were honored by the Federal President for his work .

The chairmen of the association are Kajo Wasserhövel and Jana Faus.

Article 1 was founded in Berlin in autumn 2015. The association is an open network of “experts from communication, campaign planning, political education, research and advertising” who work for democracy and respect for human dignity.

The name refers to the first article of the German Basic Law - the inviolability of human dignity - which forms the basis of political culture and defines the values ​​of open and liberal democracy in Germany.

The association is non-profit and is financed through donations.

"BoostCamps"

The association regularly organizes so-called “BoostCamps” nationwide, argumentation training and communication workshops, which are intended to provide the participants with arguments for human dignity and against discrimination.

These "BoostCamps" are aimed at volunteers, teachers or students who want to strengthen their defenses against discrimination and anti-democratic tendencies.

"VOLKER" creative competition

In 2016 the association launched the “VOLKER” creative competition. Until the end of January 2017, students and trainees were able to submit their ideas for a nationwide democracy campaign. A jury selected the winners in the radio, film, guerrilla , digital and poster categories from over 250 submissions . At the end of April 2017, they were awarded the “VOLKER” democracy prize at a gala in the Volksbühne on Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz in the presence of Federal President Frank Walter-Steinmeier . At the same time, the event was the prelude to the nationwide campaign “Democracy is everything” that resulted from the winning ideas.

Article 1 called for such a competition again in 2019 . On the occasion of the European Parliament elections , the motto “Europe. Everything else is yesterday "called on to submit an idea for a pro-Europe campaign. The winners of the competition were four young people and their idea called "European thoughts". “European Thoughts” should intensify the public discussion about the importance of the European elections. To this end, an exchange between young and old and their opinions and perspectives on Europe was organized in the context of round tables in schools. The findings of these roundtables were written on postcards and sent to Article 1 . 20 Interrail tickets were raffled off among all returns . As in 2017, the new “VOLKER” campaign received an award from the Federal President.

The “VOLKER” creative competition will continue to take place every two years in the future.

Tiny House Basic Law

To celebrate 70 years of the Basic Law, members of Article 1 visited various public places in Berlin with a tiny house to talk about the Basic Law and find out that citizens "have points of contact with the Basic Law in their everyday life", according to the initiator of the campaign Shai Hoffmann .

Support of "We are the East"

Article 1 supports the “We are the East” initiative, which, according to its own description, wants to make people from East Germany visible and tell their story.
