Ashot I. ( Armenian Աշոտ Մեծ ; † 890 ) also Aschot Bagratuni was an Armenian king from the Bagratid dynasty . He was prince from 862 to 884 and king of Armenia from 884 to 890 .

Armenia was in the 9th century. Of Arab-Muslim governors of the Caliphate of Baghdad managed. Ashot himself was recognized as Prince of Armenia in 862. It was his greatest merit, taking advantage of the gradual weakening of the caliphate in 885/886, to re-establish an Armenian kingdom, which was recognized by both the caliph and the Byzantine emperor.
