Ashaiman

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ashaiman is a city in the Greater Accra Region in Ghana . According to the last official census from 2010, the city has 190,972 inhabitants, making it the fifth largest city in Ghana.

location

Ashaiman is only a few kilometers east of Ghana's capital Accra . In the east it borders on the city of Tema, from which it was a subdistrict until 2008. In 2008 Ashaiman became independent from the Tema District and has since had its own city administration, the Ashaiman Municipality Assembly (Ashma). It is a very densely populated place with a high unemployment rate and the infrastructure is slow to develop.

Population development

Like the rest of Greater Accra, Ashaiman also has an enormously high population growth. In 1984 the municipality still had 50,918 inhabitants, by 2000 it had tripled, and by 2012 it had quadrupled. The city now has even more inhabitants than Tema, of which it was still a district in 1984. According to local information, the current population should amount to several hundreds of thousands or even more than 1 million, contrary to the official information. The new residents come looking for work in Accra or Tema from the most diverse regions of Ghana and other West African countries and often settle here for a long time, despite the lack of work here, too. However, as in many other cities in Africa, the high natural population growth is more significant in terms of population growth.

history

Ashaiman is known throughout Ghana and is notorious as a "slum" and home to criminals. Despite the rapid growth, this picture is only slowly correcting itself.

traffic

There is an inter-regional transfer station for the routes on the coast.

Facilities

There are several schools, a vocational training center and few social projects for the rehabilitation of street children and other poor and neglected marginalized groups.

Otherwise, more and more churches, mosques and slowly banks are opening in Ashaiman.
