The Asphyxia Plain is a low plain on Zavodovski Island in the Archipelago of the South Sandwich Islands in the South Atlantic . It dominates the island's landscape and is home to around 1 million breeding pairs of chinstrap penguins .

The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 2013 based on the original name of Mount Curry , which was called Mount Asphyxia (from English asphyxia , suffocation ) until 1975 . The mountain was given this name after measurements by the HMS Protector team in 1962 and 1964. It is named after the smell of the volcanic gases that emanate from its active crater.
