Mount Curry ( Spanish Monte Curry ) is a 551 m high stratovolcano and the highest point of Zavodovski Island in the archipelago of the South Sandwich Islands in the South Atlantic . It rises to the west of the Asphyxia Plain .
Argentine scientists named it in 1958 after an Argentine sailor who died on March 1, 1826 in the sea battle at Colonia del Sacramento . The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 1974 as Mount Asphyxia after the permanently escaping volcanic gases, but then decided a year later to transfer the Argentine name into English.
