Assi (1st generation)
Rab Assi (also Issi or Assa ) was an ancient Jewish scholar, is counted among the Babylonian Amorae of the first generation and lived and worked in the third century AD.
He was a contemporary and friend of Rab and Samuel and was highly valued by both.
The Talmud tells of a violent argument between Assi and Shela ben Awuna about a ritual decision that ended with the deaths of both of them soon after one another. The branches of myrtle placed on their bier would have leaned towards each other, which was interpreted as a reconciliation of both in the hereafter (Bab. Nidda 36 b).
