Serotonylation

The serotonylation is a biochemical process in which the biogenic amine serotonin on glutamine residues of proteins using the enzyme transglutaminase is transmitted II. Target proteins for this process are in particular small GTPases . Serotonylation takes place as an intracellular process inside the cell and is used to control signal transmission within the cell . The function of serotonin in serotonylation thus differs from its function as a tissue hormone and neurotransmitter, which is used for cell-to-cell communication . Serotonylation is assumed to play an important role in blood clotting and in regulating the release of insulin .
