The Astana Tombs ( Chinese  阿斯塔 那 古墓 群 , Pinyin Āsītǎnà gǔmùqún , English Astana Graves , also known as 阿斯塔 那 墓群 for short , Āsītǎnà mùqún in Chinese ) are located in the area of the Gaochang district , about 30 km east-southeast of the city center of Turpan , in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China .

It was the burial place for the residents of Gaochang from 273 to 778; H. in the period of the Western Jin - to the Tang Dynasty . Ordinary citizens to high officials were buried here. The complex covers 10 square kilometers and contains over 1000 graves. Around 400 graves have been uncovered since 1959. The tombs are located in the northern neighborhood of the ruined city of Gaochang - the capital of the former kingdoms.

English ( Aurel Stein ), Russian ( Peter Koslow ), German ( Albert von Le Coq ) and Japanese research expeditions ( Tachibana Zuichō ) found plenty of souvenirs here.

The site is famous for its mummies and grave goods, which are well preserved due to the low humidity. These include textiles and over 2000 text finds, as well as well-preserved pastries decorated in many ways ( huashi gaodian ) and other pasta (Chinese nang and jiaozi ) from the time of the Tang dynasty .

Since 1988 the site has been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China in Xinjiang (3-241).
