Ataturk Monument from Izmir

The Ataturk Monument ( Turkish İzmir Atatürk Anıtı ) is a monument in the western Turkish port city of Izmir , which is dedicated to the war of liberation and depicts the founder of Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk , as a rider. The monument is located on “Straße der Republik”. This road is on the Izmir coast, the monument itself is 60 meters southeast of the Izmir Gulf of the Aegean Sea .

After the capture of Izmir in 1922, which ended the occupation of Izmir , the city council and the governor of Izmir decided in the 1920s to erect a monument to the founder of the Turkish Republic and chairman of the Republican People's Party (CHP), Gazi Mustafâ Kemâl Pasha should be dedicated. In 1929 the contract for the construction was given to Pietro Canonica , an Italian sculptor who previously designed the Ataturk statue on the Monument of the Republic ( Cumhuriyet Anıtı ) in Taksim Square in Istanbul in 1928 . The base of the statue was designed by the Turkish architect Asım Kömürcü. The Ataturk Memorial was finally erected on July 27, 1932.

The marble used for the base is the red marble from Afyonkarahisar while the statue is made of bronze. The statue shows Ataturk on a horse in the Turkish Liberation War, while images from the war are depicted on the pedestal. Ataturk's famous quote “Armies, your first goal is the Mediterranean” is engraved there.
