Athabasca Northern Railway

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Athabasca Northern Railway (ANY) was a railway company in the Canadian province of Alberta . Their 325-kilometer route connected Boyle with Fort McMurray . Until 2007 it belonged to Cando Contracting Limited . The line should be closed in December 2007 because the superstructure is in poor condition. The train was bought by the Canadian National Railway (CN) for US $ 25 million in late 2007 . A connection to the rest of the CN network is in Boyle.

The Boyle – Fort McMurray railway was operated from 1925 to 1981 by Northern Alberta Railways , which was absorbed into the CN . In 2000, Cando Contracting Limited bought the railway.

The railway opens up important oil sand fields that are to be exploited. CN therefore invested US $ 135 million in the infrastructure by the end of 2011. Important customers, including OPTI-Nexen and Suncor in Lynton , have signed new contracts with CN. The previously achieved traffic volume would not have been sufficient to maintain the railway.

The ANY had three used EMD GP-9RM , converted EMD GP9 , in use.
