Athanasios III. of Alexandria
Athanasios III. was Orthodox Patriarch of Alexandria (1276 to 1289 and 1294 to 1303).
Life
Athanasios was a monk in St. Catherine's Monastery on Sinai .
In 1275 or 1276 he was first mentioned as Patriarch of Alexandria during a stay in Constantinople with the Byzantine Emperor Michael VIII. Athanasios was strongly against the church policy of Patriarch John XI. of Constantinople , who advocated rapprochement with the Catholic Church in Rome.
Athanasios led a council under Emperor Andronikos II , which reversed the decisions of the Council of Lyon . He also kicked the Patriarch Gregorios II. And Athanasios I. on. He was therefore exiled to the island of Rhodes around 1289 .
In 1294 he was mentioned again as Patriarch of Alexandria during a trip to Cilicia (Armenia). In 1303 he was exiled again. He lived on the island of Crete for the last years of his life . The year of his death is unknown.
