building

The three-story building has a rectangular floor plan with a portico in the style of the Propylaea of the Athens Acropolis. The building was designed by Panagiotis Kalkos in 1872 and it was completed two years later in May. The mayor's office has access to the balcony. In 1902 some ornaments were added, in 1937 a third floor was added to the building, which was executed in the original design language. In 2004, as part of the "barrier-free access for all citizens", the building was expanded to include wheelchair access and a roof garden was set up.

history

The city administration was previously housed in various buildings in the city and the construction of the city hall was repeatedly postponed. Eventually, the city took out a drachmaid 130,000 mortgage from the National Bank of Greece to finance the construction. Shops were set up and rented out on the ground floor and converted into office space in 1935. In 1983 the city administration was merged into a new administration on Liossion-Straße, but the mayor Miltiadis Evert reactivated the old building as the town hall in 1987.

In addition to the frescoes by the painter Kontoglou, there is also a collection of terracotta busts of the mayors in the building, made by Loukia Georganti (1919–2001). Since 1999 the founding act of the city of Athens has been exhibited on the ground floor, which was recently auctioned at Christie's. This document from 1833 states that 236 wealthy families donated parts of their property to public spaces, streets, parks and archaeological sites. The document was in the possession of the descendants of the lawyer Antonios Petsalis, who had worked on its formulation. The Drachma Monument was erected at the town hall in 2002 to commemorate the former currency of Greece.
