Hanno Millesi (doctor)

Hanno Millesi (born March 24, 1927 in Villach ; † April 28, 2017 in Vienna ) was an Austrian specialist in plastic surgery .

Life

Hanno Millesi studied medicine and received his doctorate for Doctor medicinae universae on 7 March 1951 the Medical Faculty of the University of Innsbruck . After graduating, he began training in pathology at the Prosecture and at the 1st Medical Department of the Wilhelminenspital . This was followed by training in general surgery at the I. Surgical University Clinic Vienna under Leopold Schönbauer . In 1955 he began further training in plastic surgery and completed a stay abroad in Sweden . The training in plastic surgery took place under the direction of Elisabeth Winkler at the I. Surgical University Clinic. The Venia legendi was awarded to him in 1967. In 1972 Millesi was appointed Associate Professor for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University Clinic of the Vienna General Hospital. In 1975 he was appointed director of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Experimental Plastic Surgery. He was appointed full professor in 1982. In 1989 he founded the Austrian Society for Hand Surgery and has been its president ever since. He was also the founder of the Millesi Center for Peripheral Nerve Surgery.

He achieved world fame as the developer of the technique of interfascicular nerve transplantation. Numerous other developments in the field of reconstructive surgery of the peripheral nerves are closely linked to or go back to Millesi, such as microsurgical neurolysis or the Millesi classification.

In 1993, he operated in cooperation with Dagmar Eberhard, his future wife, by a letter bombs stop destroying hand of the former mayor Helmut Zilk .

After his retirement in 1996, he became medical director of the Vienna private clinic . In Los Angeles he received the Millennium Award from the International Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery in 1999 . The Paracelsusring was presented to him in 2001 in his native Villach.

The first marriage had three children, including the artist Hanno Millesi . From 1998 Hanno Millesi was married to the plastic surgeon Dagmar Millesi.
