Athenion

Athenion († 101 BC ) was a leader of the slaves in the second Roman slave war .

Athenion came from Cilicia and, as a slave on an estate in western Sicily, was the overseer of two hundred other slaves. When the slave war broke out, he became the leader of the rebellious slaves and held the title of king, but then served as a strategist for Salvius, who was proclaimed king in the eastern part of the island .

After his death, Athenion was elected the new king. He sought the expropriation of the previous large landowners and wanted to convert the land into common ownership. However, this project failed because the rebellious slaves were no longer able to cope with the superior military power of Rome . Athenion was killed in a single combat by the consul Manius Aquillius .
