Athleta Christi
The honorary title Athleta Christi ( Latin for Christ's fighter ) was awarded in the 15th century by the popes to people who had made a special contribution to the military defense of Christianity against the Ottoman Empire . The recourse to the ancient Greek term of the athlete is probably related to the enthusiasm for antiquity in the Renaissance epoch . The award winners include:
- Skanderbeg , Albanian prince of the castriots
- Johann Hunyadi , Hungarian military leader
- Ștefan cel Mare , Prince of Moldova
