Atlas (king)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Atlas ( Greek  Ἄτλας ) was a son of Poseidon and the first king of Atlantis according to Plato's dialogue Kritias .

In the raffle for the world among the gods, Poseidon received the island of Atlantis. Euenor , who grew up out of the earth and had an only daughter with his wife Leukippe , Kleito, lived on this . After the death of her parents, Poseidon allied with her and fathered five pairs of twins with her . He divided the island among all ten sons, but gave the first born of the first pair of twins his mother's residence, the largest and most beautiful part of the island, and made him king over all others. He named it Atlas after the Atlantic sea that surrounds the island.
