Usage issues are a special area of philately .

These are remnants of postage stamps that can no longer be used in their present form. By attaching imprints (new value level, new country name, etc.), these remaining stocks can be used again.

Consumption issues are particularly interesting because the imprints allow many variants and varieties . There are also stamps on which an overprint has been overprinted. Not all use-up issues are official. In the Second World War in particular , private or semi-official stamps were often overprinted.

Today, use-up issues are only very rarely produced, as the relative production costs for postage stamps have fallen sharply and destroyed remnants no longer represent a major loss.
