Elevator shaft

The elevator shaft , another way of spelling the elevator shaft , is a mostly closed, quadrangular tube inside or outside a building in which the elevator car is moved up and down to move people or goods.

nature

The elevator shaft is conventionally cast from reinforced concrete and is usually closed and only accessible through the shaft end doors of the elevator system . However, masonry elevator shafts are also made. The elevator shaft with staircase usually forms the static core of a building. The elevator shaft, also known as the elevator shaft, contains all elevator-related components such as the elevator car, guide rails for the elevator car (cabin) and counterweight, hydraulic lifting pistons, etc. and can be illuminated for inspection reasons (permanently installed shaft lighting). The shaft pit is located below the lowest stop of an elevator system, and the shaft head above the top stop. The depth of a shaft pit or the height of a shaft head varies accordingly depending on the design and purpose of an elevator system. The shaft pit depth of a conventional passenger elevator system is on average between 1000 mm and 1500 mm. The shaft head height, on the other hand, is usually somewhat larger.

Construction methods

Elevator shafts are also increasingly being used for architectural reasons in a transparent construction z. B. glazed steel structures, and allow insight into the elevator technology and thus appear more open and friendly to the passenger and the architectural environment. A shaft frame is often essential for structural reasons, even when retrofitting in existing buildings. In an elevator system with traction sheave drive (pure rope operation via motor), the machine room is usually located above the elevator shaft, in a system with hydraulic drive (operation via hydraulic cylinder and oil unit) on the lowest floor, e.g. B. Basement. A shaft ventilation or smoke control is located in the shaft head of a plant, usually in the form of openings with ventilation grid in the shaft wall.
