From Rjuriks Leben ( Russian Из жизни Рюрика Is schisni Rjurika ) is a historical drama in five acts, written in 1786 by the Russian Empress Catherine II and initially published anonymously. The focus is on Ryurik , the founder of the Kievan Rus . The play is written “after Shakespeare's model without maintaining the usual rules of art of the Schaubühne”. For example, the unity of place and time is not taken into account.

In the face of death, Gostomysl , the prince of Novgorod, makes his political will. He names his grandson Rjurik, a son of his daughter Umila, as his successor, and his two brothers Sineus and Truvor as co-rulers. They make their way to Novgorod from their territory, the land of the Varangians .

In the meantime, Vadim, son of a younger daughter of Gostomysl and Prince of the Slovenes ( Ilmenslawen ), feels that he has been cheated. He makes his claim to the throne clear, but the uprising is quickly put down and Vadim arrested. However, Rjurik pardons him and Vadim swears allegiance to him.
