more details

In software development , graying out is a widespread technique for marking control elements such as buttons or menu items that are invalid in the respective context and therefore switched off (or deactivated ), i.e. cannot be selected (for example clicked on ).

In order to achieve graying out, the color saturation of the respective control element is generally reduced, and in some cases the light-dark contrast is so strong that it has the effect of a "gray veil" and is clearly less noticeable. In modern development environments such graying out is possible by simply selecting the associated settings.

The user can still see which commands would be possible in principle, but is not distracted by currently unimportant things. In contrast to the alternative of hiding unusable controls, it seems calmer if the arrangement of the controls on the screen does not change.

A similar method is the [color] Highlight ( English highlighting ) actively selected elements.

Other dimming effects are inactive windows and the change in transparency when dragging and dropping .
