Boom (sound engineering)
Boom (derived from the term "outriggers") are in the audio engineering a pair of support microphones to the main microphone system include. They serve to represent larger sound bodies on the loudspeaker base in a wider and more airy manner. This word became known especially through the use of the Decca Tree recording microphone system .
When miking with a microphone curtain of 5 or 4 microphones, all microphones of the microphone arrangement are equivalent and the outer "outriggers" are not to be regarded as support microphones in this case.
Several microphones in a row or in a surface can be combined to form an acoustic curtain or a microphone curtain.
