The Klingental exhibition space is an artist run space in Basel .

Alignment and Operation

It is organized jointly by artists, art historians and art educators, whose constellations change over the generations. Curating exhibitions and projects on one's own responsibility as part of artistic practice is of particular interest. Experimental handling of different communication formats is an important part of cross-city projects such as the Museum Night and the Regional . An important function of the Klingental exhibition space is the promotion of young talent. It shows innovative talents and offers the chance of professional experience for artists and curators. But positions of older generations should also be re-examined and conveyed. The Klingental exhibition space is supported by the Klingental exhibition space association and its members and receives a regular contribution to the operation from the city of Basel. The exhibition program is based on project entries and is not put together by a permanent curator.

history

The exhibition space was set up on the barracks area in 1974 on an artist initiative. Since then it has been operated continuously in changing coalitions of artists and agents.

The project space goes back to the crisis in traditional museum operations at the end of the 1960s, which arose from the profound, socio-political re-evaluation of the cultural. The founding of the Klingental exhibition space a few years later is directly related to the debates about the promotion of young artists and the functioning of museums. It is the oldest still existing art space in Switzerland.

architecture

Like the Kleines Klingental Museum, the Klingental exhibition space is set up in rooms of the former Klingental monastery . It is located on the ground floor of the monastery church, consecrated in 1293. In 1981 the architects Herzog & de Meuron built the exhibition space.
