Project rooms in Basel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A number of project spaces and non-institutional exhibition spaces in and around Basel are grouped together as project spaces ( offspaces or artist run space ) in Basel . They cover a wide spectrum, with a focus on contemporary art . They host numerous projects and exhibitions . With more than 20 project rooms, Basel has a high density of project rooms compared to other urban regions of a similar size.

The project spaces make up part of Basel's cultural and cultural landscape and are an alternative to the local museums , according to the project manager of the Christoph Merian Foundation's Culture Department , Christoph Meneghetti, in the Shortcut magazine: "Offspaces are independent spaces for contemporary art and an important factor in the Basel art scene. " Since the galleries are less present in Basel than in Zurich , the local project rooms contribute a lot to the development and visibility of young artists :

“In these project rooms, the artists themselves do the construction work that a gallery would otherwise do. They plan and set up the exhibition, they design and print flyers, advertise on various channels, invite collectors, curators and other artists. In this way they form the network that is necessary in order to be able to make a living from art at some point in order to make a career. As a rule, offspaces are non-commercial. If so, sales are made directly through the artist. "

history

1970-1980

The Klingental exhibition space opened its doors for the first time in 1974, making it one of the first offspaces in Basel and Switzerland.

“The history of the Klingental exhibition space began in 1971. At that time, the canton of Basel-Stadt, as the owner of the area, decided to convert the former military kitchens in the church and to allow the artists of the“ Ateliergenossenschaft Kaserne ”, who had had their workshops in the same place since 1964 as To provide the place of issue. The fact that it then took three years until the first exhibition was due to the fact that the canton suddenly lacked classrooms: Without further ado, students from the Bäumlihof schoolhouse moved into the Klingentalkirche for a few years - while their schoolhouse was being rebuilt. "

1980-2000

In 1993, the former production rooms in the rear building of the Mörsbergerstrasse 54 (M54) property in Basel created an ideal opportunity for the visarte region basel - professional association for visual art - to act as a cultural mediator in addition to the association's business - with the M54 project room . Since the beginning of 2000, a specially founded exhibition commission has been running continuous projects and exhibitions.

In 1994 the cascade capacitor was founded in the Warteck PP workshop .

In 1998, Hebel 121 was added, which has maintained a lively exchange with international artists ever since.

2000-2010

The smallest offspace in Basel has existed since 2001, Niel Thaler's invitro .

The fro , a mobile exhibition platform , existed with interruptions from 2001 to 2015.

In 2002 the French community of Hégenheim , which is just bordering Basel, got its own independent art space with FABRIKculture .

From 2004 to 2008 Lena Eriksson ran the art space Lodypop with Andrea Saemann , later with Chris Regn , where transitions between private space, studio, gallery and shop window were played.

The bblackboxx has existed since 2007 and is a special place of exchange, mainly due to its location, next to the city's asylum prison.

Not far from there, Raphael Bottazzini founded the artachment in 2007 , a former small customs house that has been used by various curators since then.

In 2010, the deuxpiece project , founded in Stuttgart , was reopened in a small shop on Kannenfeldstrasse. After two years at this location, the project is nomadic and carries out projects in different locations in Basel, Berlin and New York . The SALTS also opened in Birsfelden in 2010 .

Since 2010

From 2010 more and more self-managed exhibition rooms were added. In 2010 the Parzelle403 studio community , the ZIP and the DOCK Basel came into being , which not only functions as a project space but also as a Basel-related artist archive . In 2011 the Schwarzwaldallee and the DEPOT Basel were founded , at that time still on the site of the nt * / areal . Both existed until 2017. The Filter4 and the OSLO10 also opened for the first time.

In 2012 the Villa Renata became a project space and the artist-curator collective Dr. Kuckucks Labrador , which plays the cascade capacitor as an independent group, but also works in other places depending on the event. From 2012 to 2015, Françoise Theis curated utengasse sixty .

In 2013 the art space in Florence opened and the studio community flatterschetzt , which also houses a project space. The kunsthallekleinbasel was created in 2014 in the living room of the Basel-based artist and curator Jasmin Glaab. In 2015, the nomadic-organized Offspace Deli Projects and the project space of the Institut Kunst of the HGK Basel were founded. The tank also opened for the first time on the new site of the Dreispitz area .

In December 2015, the group exhibition (read: total) with over 20 project rooms in Basel was organized. For this purpose, the project rooms joined forces for the first time for a larger event, which attracted increased attention from the press and visitors and provided an opportunity for the various initiatives and projects to exchange ideas about their activities and goals. A discussion took place on the subject of "What's in a name? On the location of the project space", to which Manuel Wischnewski, curator of the Berlin project space Neue Berliner Raum and author of the pamphlet Vom Ende des Projektraums and Gabriel Flückiger, who was involved in the SNSF project Off OffOff Off is doing research on offspaces in Switzerland at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences . Other guests from the cultural sector such as Philippe Bischof, Guido Nussbaum and Rachel Mader were invited to internal discussion rounds called "Eintopf".

In 2016 three new project rooms were added. The 1.1 , the FAQ gallery and the jersey , which was only active until 2017.

In 2017 three more groups ended their work as a project space: The OSLO10 , the DEPOT Basel (which continues to exist as a web project) and the Schwarzwaldallee .

The city guide A Roland for an Oliver , which appears once a year and offers both a content and a geographical overview, has been providing information about the activities, locations and program items in the project rooms since 2010 .

List of project rooms in Basel

The list of project spaces in Basel shows the project spaces in the city and catchment area of Basel, sorted by category.

The border location of the city at the Basler Dreiländereck and the small-scale structure of the Basel region mean that the main part of the Basel project areas is in the city of Basel and thus in the canton of Basel-Stadt; however, some can be found in the canton of Basel-Landschaft, and offspaces in the Basel agglomeration can also be included in the Basel project space landscape, such as those in the neighboring cities of Hégenheim, Saint-Louis , Lörrach , and Weil am Rhein . In view of the municipal, regional and national administrative units that meet here, as well as the overlying agglomeration, there is no clearly definable number of Basel project areas.
