Andrea Saemann

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Andrea Saemann (born March 12, 1962 in Wilmington , Delaware, USA) is a Swiss performance and conceptual artist and performance organizer who is interested in the architectures of references, language and communication. She has been working on the Swiss Performance Prize since 2011 and coordinated the event until 2017, launched the platform for texts about Performance ApresPerf and is a founding member of PANCH - Performance Art Network CH . She is currently organizing the International Performance Art Giswil Festival .

Life

Andrea Saemann came to Basel with her parents and two sisters after her earliest youth in the USA. She completed the preliminary design course at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Bern from 1981–1982 and studied architecture at the ETH Zurich from 1982–1985 . She spent the following two years in Paris in the LEM ( laboratoire et études du mouvement ) at the École internationale de théâtre Jacques Lecoq and five more years in Hamburg at the University of Fine Arts with Marina Abramovic and BJ Blume (part of the artist duo Anna and Bernhard Blume ) to study performance and to graduate in fine arts. After a trip to Thailand, she went back to Basel, where she installed performance presentations in the Kaskadenkondensator art space together with Pascale Grau and worked as an archivist for the architects Herzog & de Meuron . Together with Lena Eriksson she organized a guest studio and is part of an artist living project called the Lodge , both in the Werkraum Warteck pp in Basel. She traveled to Asia and South Africa and started teaching performance and working as a multiplier.

Working method / work

Andrea Saemann works as a performer , spatial and narrative, with stoppages and differences between language, image, perception, memory and translation. She is interested in the organization of memory and the location and contextualization of events. In 2007, Verena Kuni wrote about Andrea Saemann in the Swiss art bulletin under the title “A saga of the real present”:

«Andrea Saemann conducts performance research with artistic means. Her performances, in which she combines re-performances and variations of historical works with new elements, combine visualization, reflection and revision - and in this way open up further perspectives. Under the working title Generation Gap , she began researching the performances of some artists of that generation in 2002 Pioneers who have undoubtedly made history - while their work has only survived in the form of more or less rudimentary documentation. ... Together with her colleague from Hamburg, Chris Regn , she contacted the artists whose performances she wanted to edit as part of the project in order to question them in video interviews and thus create a new basis for herself. ... The artistic-performative reconstruction of a historical performance - the re-enactment, i.e. the re-performance - was only a first step that had to be tackled again and again. Because even in this first phase it was important for Saemann to include levels of reflection: on the one hand, to question their own perception and to open them up to new perspectives; also with a view to a story that has always been fragmentary, calls for a polyphonic narrative. She asked artist friends from her network to also design scores for her re-enactments. "

The art scholar Sabine Gebhardt Fink wrote in 2016 about Andrea Saemann on behalf of the Swiss Institute for Cultural Studies:

“Changing collaborations and at the same time insisting on an independent performative work are central to Andrea Saemann. Her curatorial work and the creation of “conceptual frames” for other performers - for example in the work Tskaltubo Hot Pots in Georgia (2016) - can be described as “Salonology”; Conviviality, exchange and non-hierarchical discourses play a central role. "
