The project thealit Frauen.Kultur.Labor. was created in 1990/1991 from the former Frauenkulturhaus Bremen (founded 1982) with the aim of introducing feminist positions epistemologically and practically into the cultural discussion.

The thealit Women.Culture.Lab. Since its inception, it has designed international exhibitions and symposia that create suitable conditions for interaction between artistic and scientific reflection. As a result, an international network of over 200 artists and scientists was created, which enables critical research and experimental changes to the respective practices. Different curators (including Ulrike Bergermann, Claudia Reiche, Helene von Oldenburg and Andrea Sick ) are responsible for the international laboratories in changing constellations . Thealit has implemented several Europe-wide projects and implemented extraordinary settings and concepts in, for example, empty department stores.

Cooperation partners were u. a. Bildwechsel Hamburg, City Art Gallery Sofia, Estonian Academy of Arts Tallinn / E-Media Center, Society for Contemporary Art Bremen , Heinrich Böll Foundation , Kronika Center for Contemporary Art Bytom, Academy of Media Arts Cologne , Kunstihoone Tallinn Art Hall, online platform Nach dem Film, The Thing Hamburg , University of Sofia / Department of Philosophy, Constant Association for Art and Media-Brussels, Kino46, Neues Museum Weserburg Bremen , Schwankhalle .

The thealit was funded by the Federal Ministry for Family, Seniors, Women and Youth , ifa Institute for Foreign Relations e. V. , Fonds Soziokultur, Kulturstiftung des Bundes , European Commission / Culture 2000 . Thealit is institutionally funded by the Senator for Culture Bremen.

concept

The most important fields of investigation and experimentation in thealits programs are media art and media theory , with a view to the social restructuring that is currently associated with digital media applications and their control. The aim of thealit is to promote the cooperation of artists and scientists from different disciplines and to intervene in international debates about the boundaries between art , science , technology and their organizational forms: with suggestions on scientific and artistic processes, their possibilities of representation and knowledge.
