Bildwechsel - umbrella organization for women , media , culture has been a self-administered, non-commercial artist project since 1979. Bildwechsel is an action forum for networking, with extensive archives on the life, work and representative history of international artists of all ages . The largest collection is the video collection of over 10,000 (as of 7/2018) titles, which provide artists with a panoramic view of the world.

history

Bildwechsel (spelling: bildwechsel) was founded in 1979 from the Hamburg media shop in the tradition of self-organized media projects, as part of a political movement , under the name "Frauenmedienladen bildwechsel". The 1970s, referring back to the late 1920s, were determined by the hope of autonomy , emancipation and counterculture . These hopes were linked to the then still new medium of video . A network of alternative media culture was created. In the emerging feminist movement, video activism was redefined . The media education center Hamburg and bildwechsel remained from the video landscape of that time.

Equipped with a printing press , film and video equipment, the founders produced video works, showed films and gave access to exchange, know-how and equipment. They created a video catalog and other publications, and tried out a non-commercial video rental business.

“Bildwechsel was naturally located and involved within the Hamburg women's scene. B. produced city maps for women, in which all women places were listed. At that time there were over 60 projects. For a long time we had a center claim - due to our good technical infrastructure, the video equipment, the photo laboratory, the printing press. That was great. The first issues of the Hamburger Frauenzeitung were z. B. printed by us. "

The focus of the activities was on video productions, events and projects that worked on a critical, feminist media culture .

“Started as a media store, the project is now not just an archive for audio-visual media, but also an idea that took root in Warsaw or Glasgow. [...] At the beginning there was the idea of a media store looking for new technical means of expression. Women from many cities came together here to work, make videos and events. I find that moving to this day. But that could not be sustained in the long term, as the way we deal with technology has also changed. Bildwechsel has developed from a very committed community of authors, from media campaigns to an archive and library. "

technology

Starting with the Portapak - the first portable video device with a camera and recorder - the video formats and materials have constantly changed since the introduction of video technology.

There were various video crises, with the tape material, the durability or the mechanics. The tapes have to be rewound and played over again and again in order to be seen with the latest technology. Old devices are preserved in order to view or edit the works in the formats in which they were created. From 1996 the work for the preservation grew and since 2006 there was then a museum-like, but technically still functional video equipment park consisting of machines from earlier video formats - hybrid combined with the current technical possibilities.

The video museum is the restoration laboratory for the audiovisual media of bildwechsel and was set up in 2006 - as a consequence and as a result of the responsibility for the videos and films handed over to the video collection. Specifically, these are performance videos, information tapes (today: tutorial ), agitation videos, documentaries , live recordings, home videos , video essays, feature films , video diaries and art videos. One focus is on artistic experiments with audiovisual media and especially on committed, self-produced work.

“Homemade and rare: these are the films. […] The films that will be shown this evening will not be shown again so easily and quickly. They are films that women have made uncontrollably and independently about being a woman. There are films for women's days and holidays and working days. "

Working method

Voluntary work and contributions from over 200 artists per year are the basis of the activities. The background of the archives makes it possible to understand Bildwechsel as a shared studio or atelier , where materials, books and videos can act as suggestions and to contextualize one's own productions.

"The organizers draw inspiration for the boys' ball from magazines such as Die Freund, Die Frauenliebe or Garçonne, which established a new, emancipated image of women in the 1920s."

- Kerstin Schrödinger on May 3, 2008 in the TAZ.

Based on the premises near Hamburg Central Station with weekly opening hours, which have been occupied since 1997, other so-called bildwechsel Bases work independently in Berlin, Glasgow and Basel. Ganz Bildwechsel develops model formats with which collected and newly produced materials can be shown and presented to the public. The question of representations, international systems and structural ambiguities in relation to the organization of gender and art is also the question of the scope in these models. This is how the virtual gallery Helga Broll, the performance group Evi Nic and C, who developed the gallery game, the boys' ball or the vegan opera, came into being. Cooperations e.g. B. with the information service of the Cyberfeminist Conference , the women's culture laboratory Thealit , the art space Kaskadenkondensator , the Queer Institute or the conference of female art historians .

“Exactly, we are also still an artist house, we have the Broll Gallery as a very flexible gallery that was once set up as a connection between Hamburg and Basel, so that Bildwechsel can take the difficulty of organizing exhibitions from its neck, even though it is part of it of image change is. We keep making such incredibly skilful and unskillful moves. We have from Marianne Wex , for example. B. Get photos for the archive - the originals of her photo book, which was widely used in the 80s, on female and male body language as a result of patriarchal rule. It has quasi made an order about complicated facts and power relations. We have updated this approach in cooperation with Antke Engels Queer Institute . Another example is the series of interviews on updates with performers of the role model generation. "

bildwechsel is open to projects, plans, events and collaborations and inspires its projects on the questions of the active employees. For Bildwechsel, the actualization of ideas, forms, films and contexts and reflecting on historical references is an artistic approach to material and contemporary artistic practice. A project is launched with every collection.

"Through our networking work, current topics have flowed into the archived."

- Doro Wiese : Chris Regn in an interview with Doro Wiese appeared on August 9, 2004 in the TAZ.

The artist-based collection and action focus has been constantly expanding since 2006. There are separate collections and presentations with productions in trans *, queer and intersexual contexts, on the Hamburg off-art scene, or there is also a collection of material from artists who want to be archived and found at bildwechsel. An artist portal and various online campaigns and a virtual presentation model for part of the inventory - the video castle - are networked on the Internet.
