Marianne Wex

Marianne Wex (* 1937 in Hamburg ) is a German artist and author.

Live and act

Wex studied fine arts at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts and in Mexico City.

From 1963 to 1980 Wex worked as a lecturer in Hamburg. Her interest in feminism, mass media, sociology, and healing determine the form of her artworks, which conceptually take up signs, symbols, and colors in various media such as painting, photography, typography, and calligraphy.

In the 1970s, Wex began to focus on what she notes as subconscious "feminine" and "masculine" body languages. Her research culminated in the work of art: Let's Take Back Our Space:: " Female and male body language as a result of patriarchal structures", 1977. Wex lived in Hamburg between 1972 and 1977. During this time, more than 5000 photographs of women and men were taken, most of them in the streets of Hamburg and the surrounding area. These images reflected their observation of very different body language between the two sexes. Wex's own photographs have been supplemented with images from mass media such as advertisements, films, tabloids and newspapers. She also examined and photographed sculptures from 2000 BC. And found out that idealized postures and body shapes of the two sexes are much more divergent today than in the past. Wex incorporated these historical examples into their work. The resulting work of art comprises more than 200 panels on which the photographs are arranged in different categories. Since then, the work of art has been exhibited worldwide and is considered a pioneering work of feminist art. The resulting publication on the work of art was translated into English and French and the project still serves as an important role model in women's and gender studies. The FrauenMediaTurm documents the work in its chronicle of the new women's movement.

After her diagnosis in the 1980s, Wex turned away from the art to travel through New Zealand, India, Japan and Canada where she developed an interest in self-healing. Wex then traveled to London to study under Lily Cornford. After that, Wex began teaching self-healing to women himself. She continues this practice today and finally deals with the problems and possibilities of parthenogenesis.
