Martina Gmür (* 1979 in Münster VS ) is a Swiss artist who works sculpturally, object-like and installatively as a painter and performance artist in Basel .

biography

Martina Gmür trained from 1996–1999 at the École de design et Haute école d'art du Valais , édhéa in Sierre and 1999–2002 at the University of Design and Art in Basel. In 2007 she received the Manor Art Prize and a solo exhibition in Sion with publication. While still a student, she received the UBS Art Award in 2000 at an exhibition in London's Whitechapel Art Gallery .

The artist can work with the Basel gallery Stampa, which has also represented Pipilotti Rist , Monika Dillier and Miriam Cahn , and exhibit regularly in the gallery and at the international art fair Art Basel . In 2004 she received the sponsorship award of the Canton of Valais and in 2002 and 2008 the work grant from the Basel-Stadt art credit . When she exhibited in Abidjan , Ivory Coast in 2007 , she was honored there with the Grand Prix du Festival International des Arts Visuels d'Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire . She won studio grants in 2007 in Montreal with the Atelier Mondial and in 2005 in Nairs in the Center for Contemporary Art in the Engadine. In 2011 she benefited from a studio grant in the Dreispitz art open-air camp in Basel. She was part of the Basel performance group GABI, which performed joint performances from 1999 onwards.

Martina Gmür mainly works with painting and the image carrier and tries out a wide variety of materials and techniques. She saws shapes out of the subsurface, uses foil, jute, plaster eggs as a picture carrier or creates views as lockable furniture in the sense of a cupboard or a view behind shutters. The works show people, animals, things and landscapes, figurative and abstract, and live from the relationships between color, support and background, from fragmentation, transparency, darkness, density and emptiness.

From 2014 to 2017 she studied yet apprenticeships of Art and Design in Basel and graduated with a Master of Arts from.

Her works are represented in the art collection of the Kunstkredit Basel-Stadt und Baselland, in the Art Museum Wallis and in the Art Museum Thun .
