Monika Günther and Ruedi Schill

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Monika Günther (* 1944 in Bad Hersfeld , Germany ) and Ruedi Schill (* June 18, 1941 , † July 31, 2020 in Lucerne, Switzerland) are an important artist couple in the field of Performance Art . As artistic personalities , through their artistic and curatorial work they have been making a decisive contribution to the development, promotion and dissemination of performance art in Lucerne, throughout Switzerland and to its international perception since the 1980s .

Career

They have been realizing performance art, exhibitions, workshops and organizing festivals since 1995. They accepted invitations to conferences and festivals around the world, performed their work in public places and in a museum context, and taught the art of action. Helen Koriath wrote in 2016 in the SIKART Lexicon:

“In 1995 they decided to collaborate in a performative manner and to this day have created an unmistakable collaborative work in which human behavior, rituals and patterns of perception are thematized and social issues are impressively transferred into the aesthetic. For this they have received high international recognition. "

Monika Günther studied painting under Gerhard Hoehme from 1966–1971 at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . She works with painting, drawing , sculpture , installation , photography and action art. Since 1980 she has been exhibiting , realizing art in public spaces and showing performances. Monika Günther has lectureships and guest lectureships for performance art at various art schools and universities. In 2007 Edith Krebs wrote about Monika Günther's work in the Neue Zürcher Zeitung:

"The German artist Monika Günther, who has lived in Lucerne for many years and who often performs with her partner Ruedi Schill, describes herself as a niche inhabitant." "Pain and injury are central themes in Günther's art, which is heavily based on intuition Topic with herself until she feels ready to embody it performatively. The artist repeatedly speaks of the phenomenon of presence, which is essential for the performance. "You have it or you don't have it," Günther is convinced of. She has it, you can feel that with every sentence the sensitive artist speaks into the camera. "

Ruedi Schill graduated from the Biberach Graphic Arts School from 1962–1963 and the Design School, now the F + F School for Art and Design , in Zurich from 1971–1972 . He had been active in the then new field of action art since 1979 , but also practiced Land Art and worked with interdisciplinary and experimental approaches with all new media and actions. His great presence as a performance artist in museums and at international festivals is always described.

In 1971 he founded the Apropos gallery, which has been organized together with Monika Günther since 1995 and exists in Lucerne as the Apropos project space . In 1982 he curated the first Performance Art Festival in Switzerland at Palazzo Liestal in Liestal. From 1995-2007 he taught performance art at the Lucerne School of Art and Design (HGKL), first as a guest lecturer and then as a lecturer.
