There are currently 250 pupils, apprentices and students attending the school. Around 500 young people and adults complete courses. F + F is a member of the Swiss Design Schools.

history

The school was founded in 1971 as a F + F school for experimental design (F + F for form and color ) by Doris Stauffer and Serge Stauffer and Bendicht Fivian, Peter Gygax, Peter Jenny and Hansjörg Mattmüller .

This was preceded by years of disputes about a contemporary artist education in Zurich. The F + F was supposed to be an alternative to the Kunstgewerbeschule Zürich KGSZ and emerged from its F + F (color form) class . Thus, in 1971, the first art training in German-speaking Switzerland was established at F + F, because the state arts and crafts schools only focused their training on the applied arts.

At the beginning the school was organized as an association, since 2006 it has been supported by a non-profit foundation . Personalities from politics and culture belong to the board of trustees, so u. a. Giovanni Borelli, Jean-Pierre Hoby , Rudolf Schilling, Werner Kieser , Samir , Claudia Jolles, Walter Keller , Sandi Paucic, Zuzana Ponicanova , Rolf Schmid , Juri Steiner , Eva Wagner, Markus Weiss, Irene Müller and Suzann-Viola Renninger. The current President of the Board of Trustees is Rolf Staub. The city of Zurich and the canton of Zurich pay operating contributions to the school.

The first classrooms were spread across the city at various locations, including the Drahtschmidli youth center , which was the focus of the politically turbulent 1980s. Since then, F + F has also been using a studio in the Rote Fabrik. Today the school is housed in a functional warehouse and office building at Flurstrasse 89 in Zurich Albisrieden . The building was erected in 1949 as a five-story reinforced concrete frame structure by the architect Gottlieb Welti, is now part of Max Maag's real estate group and housed the UBS art collection until 2003 . The warehouse building was prepared for the purposes of the art school through a conversion carried out by the architect Stephan Rutz together with the school management of F + F and with the support of the Presidential Department of the City of Zurich. The milk bar is the school's public cafeteria. The Zitropress printing workshop has been rented in the main building since 2015. The studio rooms for the graphics class are located at Flurstrasse 95, they were also converted by the architect Stephan Rutz. The studios for the fashion design course, the photography class and the photo studio are located at Flurstrasse 93.

Primary and Further Education

The school offers state-recognized courses with an HF diploma (fine arts, photography, visual design, film and fashion design) and with a federal certificate of proficiency (specialist class graphics and specialist class photography). The Matur ( Abitur ) is not a requirement for admission, so the F + F represents an alternative to training at the Swiss art and design colleges . The HF courses end with a diploma from the higher technical school . The basic school training (subject classes) prepare for the Federal Certificate of Proficiency (EFZ) ; The design vocational diploma can be acquired at the same time during both courses . Two preliminary design courses are also offered, either as one-year full-time training or part-time. The public further education of the F + F offers evening and weekend courses in design and art, as well as courses for youngsters for 11 to 16 year olds.
