Peter Trachsel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Peter Trachsel (born May 2, 1949 in Schaffhausen ; † August 26, 2013 in Vienna ) was a Swiss artist and art organizer. Through his socio-cultural projects, which he realized with the Hasena association in the Prättigau village of Küblis , he is considered a pioneer of rural participatory art.

life and work

After training as a decorator, Trachsel attended the F + F School for Experimental Design (today F + F School for Art and Design) in Zurich from 1972 to 1973 and held various teaching positions from 1973 to 1984, especially at F + F. Trachsel was one of the pioneers of performance art in Switzerland and received numerous awards, including the Federal Art Scholarship in 1977 and 1978 ; in particular from 1977 to 1993 he showed performances in Switzerland, France, Portugal and New York. Works from this period are documented in publications by F + F such as Genie There's (1981) and F + F Zurich. The open art course (1991).

In 1981 Trachsel founded his own publishing house and has since published the artist magazine Veleno . From 1981 he ran the Hasena Association - Institute for (the) flowing art traffic , which became the focus of his artistic activity, and began to initiate participatory projects. These were mostly created in collaboration with other cultural workers and often with the involvement of lay people. In the mid-1980s he moved with his family from Zurich to Dalvazza near Küblis in Prättigau ( GR ) and the rural environment became his field of activity.

The Passagenhaus cultural center with two outdoor stages was opened in Küblis in 2005 and the foundation for the flow of art was established as the sponsor of this cultural center. In 2006, Peter Trachsel set up an archive with documentation material on the association's projects and its artistic activities in an office container on the site, and set up a public library. From 2009 the Passagenhaus also included a shop, a kitchen and a work and bedroom for invited artists. An important part of Peter Trachsel's archive was transferred to the Graubünden State Archive in 2016 and thus made accessible to the public. The two websites managed by Peter Trachsel were added to the Swiss National Library 's web archive in 2017 and can also be accessed offline there.

Throughout his life, Peter Trachsel has always produced works of art in a more traditional sense in addition to these organizational and journalistic activities. This included drawings, sculptures, photographs and a considerable number of art-in-building projects (particularly in the canton of Graubünden).
