Sabian Baumann (born June 19, 1962 in Zug ) is a Swiss artist . He lives and works in Zurich .

Life

Sabian Baumann studied fine arts from 1987 to 1991 at the University of Art and Design (today ZHdK) in Zurich, where he currently lives and works. Since 2001 he has been teaching at the F + F School for Art and Media Design in Zurich and has also been a lecturer at the École supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Geneva, at the Lucerne University of Art and Design and at the Zurich University of the Arts.

In addition to numerous awards, Baumann received the studio grant from the City of Zurich in New York in 1996 and the studio grant from the Aargau Board of Trustees in Berlin in 2001 and the Erna and Curt Burgauer Foundation's sponsorship award in 2012 .

Baumann's oeuvre , which deals with bodies, identities and cultural values, includes sculptural, filmic and installation works as well as extensive drawings. In it, Baumann presents - mostly figurative and with references to motifs of high and popular culture - breaks and paradoxes that go beyond ideal social images and represent normality as an exception to be negotiated in time and space. By playing with various stylistic references, the images appear like drawn collages and generate a tension that can be related to the content - the resistance to social expectations and stereotypical codes as well as the associated feelings of indisposition - and always also to emotional sensitivities to express. A tragic-comic sense of humor often unfolds in playfulness .

Baumann's collection of works also includes numerous collaboratively conceived, queer-feminist art projects that Baumann helped to organize and often also initiated, including a. Sexismus Productions , CASUAL , Working On It and An Unhappy Archive . In interventions , film productions, performances and discussions, these question social roles, especially with regard to gender norms, and at the same time serve the artists to empower themselves in the art world.
