Mail Art by HR Fricker (1990)
“Place of Irony” by HR Fricker in St. Gallen

From 1973, HR Fricker completed training as an educator at the home care school in Rorschach , deliberately as an alternative to studying art . At the same time he attended courses at the F + F School for Art and Media Design in Zurich in 1973/1974 .

After initial photo work and traces of writing in the winter landscape of Trogen, HR Fricker used the photocopy for his art campaigns in public spaces at the end of the 1970s. He marked his routes through St. Gallen with photocopies of his self-portrait. As a result, a small poster scene was created in the streets of St. Gallen. In 1980 he proclaimed the “fictional art gallery St.Gallen” with posters.

In 1981 HR Fricker founded the “Office for Artistic Activities in the Country” in Trogen , Appenzell Ausserrhoden , and became active in the worldwide mail art scene. In 1984 he called for "tourism" to visit each other and initiated the 1st and 2nd worldwide decentralized Mail Art and Networker Congress in 1986 with Günther Ruch and in 1992 with Peter W. Kaufmann . In 1992 he marked his house in Trogen with the sign "Networker Hotel".

Since the 1990s, HR Fricker has increasingly been working with signs and signposting or designating places with formulas such as ORT DER LIST, ORT DER GEWALT, ORT DER IRONIE. In 2007 his homepage “placeofplaces.com” was created. He founded his own museums such as the “Alpstein Museum”, which mainly consists of house libraries in mountain inns, and the Museum of Life Stories . In 2005 he initiated the “Trogener Art Prize for People with Disabilities”. In 2012 he created the geometer monument in Teufen as the symbolic center of the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden .
