The Auster J / 1 Autocrat was a single-engine, three-seat propeller plane made by the British manufacturer Auster Aircraft in the 1940s.

history

After the Second World War , Taylorcraft (England) decided to further develop the tried and tested Taylorcraft Auster observation aircraft into a touring aircraft. First, an Auster V was given a Blackburn Cirrus Minor II engine on a trial basis . At the same time, a prototype was created that was named "Taylorcraft Auster V Series J / 1 Autocrat". When the company was renamed Auster Aircraft on March 8, 1946, the name of the new model was also shortened to Auster J / 1 Autocrat.

The Autocrat was designed as a high-wing aircraft and had a fabric-covered tubular steel hull. It had a tail wheel landing gear and a two-bladed propeller. There was a third seat behind the two front seats.

The first series aircraft was delivered in December 1945, production ended in 1952. With over four hundred copies, the Autocrat was one of the most successful post-war aircraft in Great Britain. Based on the J / 1, other types of aircraft were created in the following years.

On October 15, 1946, the Autocrat of the English magazine The Airplane (registration G-AERO) landed as the first British civil aircraft on an aircraft carrier, the Illustrious .
