Marcus Sandell (born September 23, 1987 in Espoo ) is a former Finnish ski racer . His strongest discipline was the giant slalom . Sandell became vice junior world champion in giant slalom in 2007 , won three European Cup races and achieved several top 10 placements in the World Cup . In September 2009, he suffered serious injuries in a training fall.
biography
Sandell competed in his first FIS races in December 2002 and already reached the first podium in January 2003. His first major international event was the 2004 Junior World Championships in Maribor , where he was only 34th in giant slalom and 42nd in Super-G and did not finish in slalom. A year later he already reached eleventh place in the Super-G and 18th place in the giant slalom at the Junior World Championships 2005 in Bardonecchia . Two weeks later he won his first FIS race. In December 2004 and January 2005 the Finn contested his first three races in the European Cup , but did not yet make it into the points.
From the 2006/07 season Sandell was a member of the European Cup squad and started regularly in this racing series. After winning his first points in the slalom races in Salla at the start of the season, he already achieved second place in the first giant slalom in Levi and the day after he celebrated his first European Cup victory in the second giant slalom in Levi with almost half a second ahead of Austrian Michael Zach . This was followed by another victory in Serre Chevalier's giant slalom and several top 10 places, with which he won the giant slalom and was eighth in the overall European Cup classification. In the same winter he also competed in his first world cup races . He won his first World Cup points on December 21, 2006 with 19th place in the giant slalom in Hinterstoder and towards the end of the season he scored again with 27th place in the giant slalom in Kranjska Gora . In February 2007 he took part in the World Championships in Åre . There he was eliminated in the first giant slalom round and could not take part in the main competition in the slalom after a failure in the qualifying race. In the team competition , he achieved fourth place with his teammates. Four weeks later he won the silver medal in the giant slalom at the 2007 Junior World Championships in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee .
After his previous year's performance, Sandell was promoted to the Finnish World Cup team in 2007. In the 2007/08 World Cup season , he initially achieved several top 20 placements, but had to accept a few failures, especially in slalom. On February 23, 2008 he finished ninth in the giant slalom in Whistler for the first time among the top ten and at the season finale in Bormio he reached eighth place in the giant slalom and thus for the first time in the top 10. In the Giant Slalom World Cup, he finished 16th as the second-best Finn. In the European Cup he won the giant slalom in St. Vigil and a third place in the giant slalom in Hinterstoder in the 2007/08 season . In the 2008/09 World Cup season , the giant slalom was again his strongest discipline. Sandell reached a tenth place in Sestriere and another three top 20 results, but fell back to 24th place in the Giant Slalom World Cup. In the slalom, as in the previous year, he did not bring a result to the finish line, but in the super combination he was able to score for the first time with 27th place in Sestriere. At the 2009 World Championships in Val-d'Isère , the Finn finished 16th in the giant slalom, but fell out of the slalom in the second round. In the European Cup he only contested four races this winter. His best result was second place in the giant slalom in St. Vigil.
On September 28, 2009, Sandell had an accident while training on the Pitztal Glacier in Tyrol . He came off the piste, fell into a scree field and suffered serious injuries to the kidney and spleen as well as fractures of the nasal bone and wrist. In the hospital Innsbruck after he had a kidney removed. At the giant slalom in Kranjska Gora on January 29, 2010, he made his comeback as a forerunner. The first competition after his serious injury was the giant slalom of the 2010 Winter Olympics on February 23, where he was eliminated in the second round. This was his only race start this season.
After the 2010/11 season was initially characterized by modest performances, Sandell was able to establish himself in the top of the world again on February 6, 2011 as seventh in the giant slalom in Hinterstoder . Twelve days later, he achieved tenth place in the giant slalom of the 2011 World Cup in Garmisch-Partenkirchen . In the World Cup slalom, he was eliminated. In the 2011/12 season he was in the top ten twice, and three times so far in the 2012/13 season . His best result so far is a fourth place, achieved on February 24, 2013 in the giant slalom in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. However, he was not spared further injuries or other physical problems. On October 30, 2012, he had to undergo an operation on his hand in Helsinki, and he ended the 2016/17 season before the start of the World Championships due to persistent back pain.
On May 8, 2018, he announced his retirement from active ski racing.
