Career

Michael Zach attended the main ski school in Bad Gastein and the ski hotel management school in Bad Hofgastein . He achieved his first national and international successes in 1999 with three Austrian student championship titles and victory in the giant slalom of the Trofeo Topolino . In 2001 he won the Super-G of the Whistler Cup in his age group . After reaching the age limit, Zach took part in FIS races and national (junior) championships from winter 2001/2002 . In 2003 he won the gold medal in Super-G at the European Youth Olympic Festival in Bled . At the Junior World Championships in 2005 and 2006 he was fourth in the giant slalom. At the Austrian Youth Championships in 2006, he achieved victory in giant slalom and podium places in all other disciplines in his youth class II. In the general class he won his only medal with second place in the giant slalom in the same year .

After being accepted into the B-squad of the Austrian Ski Association , Zach started regularly in the European Cup from January 2006 . The first podium and also the first top-10 finish in the European Cup, he scored second place in the giant slalom in Levi November 29, 2006. After another top-10 results, he was on 4 December 2007 as second in the giant slalom in Geilo one second time on the podium of a European Cup race. In the next three years he achieved a total of nine top 10 placements in the disciplines of giant slalom, downhill and super combined, but he did not succeed in making the top three.

In the World Cup , Zach made his debut on March 3, 2007 in the giant slalom of Kranjska Gora , where he was eliminated in the first round. After that, he was now part of the A-squad and did not play in other World Cups until winter 2009/2010 . He only achieved a countable result with 40th place in the Kvitfjell Super-G , while he was unable to qualify for the second round at his giant slalom starts. Once he would have clearly succeeded in qualifying for the final run of the top 30: In the first round of the giant slalom in Adelboden on January 9, 2010, Zach drove with start number 47 in 14th position, but this race was due to thick fog after 58 starters in the first Run aborted. After the winter of 2009/2010, Zach was dismissed from the ÖSV squad. At the beginning of the next 2010/2011 season he took part in two Nor-Am races and a World Cup race in the USA, but remained without a result. Then he ended his career.
